Revealed Week One: Before All Things

Revealed // Week One

There is no other place to begin this Revealed devotional series than with Genesis. It is the first way God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit revealed himself. Everything we know about God started at creation.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

Before All Things

It’s tempting to begin with God as Creator, but the first sentence of the Bible reveals a preexisting condition. God is uncreated. Everything God reveals about himself throughout Scripture has always existed. He is perfect, whole, complete—he cannot be divided.

One of the core beliefs of the Christian faith is that God is three persons in one—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They live in perfect community. Gregory of Nyssa says,  “…we do not believe the Father does anything by himself in which the Son is not also involved. Again, we do not believe that the son acts on his own apart from the Holy Spirit.” Every act of God is an act of the Triune God. Therefore, the first sentence of the Bible reveals that before God was Creator, he was Father, he was Son, he was Spirit.

It was necessary for God to exist as Father, Son, and Spirit before he was Creator.

This week I invite you to read the following daily scriptures. As you do, consider the incredible truth that as God created the heavens and earth he did so with a father’s heart, a son’s heart, and with his very own breath (Spirit).

Day One
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1: 1-3

Day Two
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. Psalms 33:6

When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. Psalms 104:30

Day Three
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5

Day Four
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Colossians 1: 16-17

Day Five
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40:28

Day Six
(Consider creation with these verses as a filter of God’s love as a father, as a son, and his spirit.)

I have loved you with an everlasting love…Jeremiah 31:3

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. John 15:9

…you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God… Romans 8:15-16

Day Seven
Selah
