Five things I heard this week.

  • The phrase “in a dream” appears five times in the account of Jesus’ birth according to Matthew. God gave Joseph dreams to open his heart, to warn against danger, and to give specific directions.
  • How does God love? Unconditionally, in humility, and right next to you.
  • God did not speak to Moses from the burning bush until after Moses noticed it and was curious. When the Lord saw that [Moses] turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush. (Ex 3:4) What’s the burning bush in my life? And, have I taken the time stop and inquire about it? What am I missing?
  • The love of God can be likened to being accepted into Harvard because of who you know, not because of your efforts.
  • Things to learn from blind Bartimaeus – Mark 10:46-52
    • Be aware of who and where Jesus is.
    • Don’t let others stop you from crying out.
    • Take heart! Jesus will stop and call for you.
    • Be aware of your need, get specific.
    • Be ready to see and follow.
      • Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.”  And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.
