My mom sent this picture to me. I knew exactly which Joy thought it would accent.

The psalmist writes, When the cares of my heart are many, your comforts cheer me up. Psalm 94:19
Maybe I’m just too excited about the new Mary Poppins movie opening next week. Eeek! But, I keep thinking about the song “A Spoonful of Sugar.” Poppins suggest that sugar helps the medicine go down. But I’d like to suggest (mainly because of the Bible) that… just a spoonful joy is the medicine we need, the medicine we need, the medicine we need.
Solomon echoes the Psalm 94 and writes, A joyful heart is good medicine…. Proverbs 17:22
Let’s think about this from two perspectives.
- If you are crushed, weary, anxious, feeling lost, alone, ______ (fill in the blank.) There is a joy readily accessible for you and it knows how to comfort you. Joy comes from God, it was his idea and he is so good at it. You don’t have to drum it up, the Holy Spirit produces it in our lives. Take a deep breath, it’s already yours.
- If you know this joy, there are people all around you in need of it. We are often the walking, talking embodiment of God’s joy. Sometimes he does a supernaturally, unexplainable work in people. Other times, he loves to co-labor with us. He uses us to release his joy in people.
I’m praying for you today. That you feel joy’s presence in your heart, soul, mind and strength today. I pray that if you need a little help, God will send you a friend.
I, also, pray that if we see people in need that we will have the courage to offer them a spoonful of joy today. You never know what the smallest gesture will shift in someone.
