His Heart, Our Cover

Day One // Everyday Response

In the Bible we continually find God being referred to as a covering. We see terms like hiding place, refuge, shelter, dwelling place, home, rock of ages, stronghold, and many more. I want to connect the promise of God’s covering to his heart. Much like the physical and figurative heart of man, God’s essence, his very nature, flows and pumps in and out of his heart. That place—his heart—is our covering.

As we cover up and bury ourselves deep in his heart, our lives become everyday responses to him. We root, and grow, and bear fruit from his heart. His life is our life source. The place in which we choose to hide will be the very thing our lives reflect (Psalm 115:4-8). Is there anything more worthy of reflection, of response, than our wonderful savior, Jesus?

David writes in Psalm 27,

One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire (meditate) in his temple (vs 4).

Then, in the next verse, David tells us the result of gazing on the beauty of the Lord—He will cover us!

…for he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock (vs 5).

These are questions I’m asking myself today. Am I hiding in the Lord? In what ways do I see his reflection? Am I taking cover in other places? If so, what will I do to change my hiding place?
