His Beauty, Our Desire

Day Two // Everyday Response

When I read Psalm 27, One thing I ask, seek…to gaze on the beauty of the LORD…, I wonder what it was that grabbed David’s heart and wouldn’t let go? And, I wonder if it has grabbed my heart in the same way? As I’ve asked the Holy Spirit to teach me, two things come to mind. I’m sure there are more, hope you join the conversation.

One
We were created to live in perfection, the Garden of Eden. We have an innate desire to see beauty, and we will seek it out. David declares that the LORD was his focus. I hope my life is resounding the same declaration. Who can compare to him…Idols (Isaiah 40:18-19)? Nope. There is no thing or no one like Jesus. He is perfect (Psalm 18:30).

But, Jesus isn’t something to gawk and stare at like art on the wall. I’m convinced that if we are truly looking at Jesus to satisfy our desires, our gaze will turn into pursuit and relationship. He is living and breathing and beckons a matching response.

Two
It’s not just that Jesus is beautiful, it’s that he is the very definition of beauty. As we desire and seek beauty, we should look for it in Jesus because he sets the standard. Paul writes that Jesus is preeminent, before all things (Colossians 1:15-20). That preeminence applies to truth, wisdom, love, etc… God’s heart is where the root of all our desires originate–And only where they are truly satisfied.

What would you add? Why does your heart cry, one thing I ask…to gaze on the beauty of the Lord?
