As I laid on the floor asking the Lord about doing another advent series, I could see the word wonder in front of me the way warm breath wisps into the cold air. His answer was obvious.
Off the top of my head, I could only think of three scriptures about wonder and wasn’t sure I could do twenty-five days. So I started to study in my usual place—the dictionary. I like to dig into the Hebrew and Greek words because there is always, without fail, a well of wealth. In this case, a well of wonder.
I went searching the dictionary for one word and came out with six more, leading to a handful of other ideas. Although separate, each word was connected by a steady strand. I began to jot things down, add bookmarks, highlight sections, look up questions. Three hours later, I was waist-deep in pages of notes. In this case, waist-deep in pages of wonder.
I’m giddy with excitement about what I have already found. And I know there’s more to be discovered!
Today, I want to start by sharing some, just some, of the words that came up in connection with wonder. Get curious about the ones that surprise you, be thankful for the ones you feel on a regular basis, and make a note of the ones you want to experience (again).
awe, surprise, amazed
marvel, miracle,
discuss, reason, ponder, dialogue,
behold, look, to see, curious,
beyond comprehension
Jesus, renew our sense of wonder. Not because it’s the Christmas thing to do, but because wonder is a part of everything you are.
