The Psalms are full of recounting the wondrous works of God. They often include miracles, deliverance, and healings throughout Israel’s history. As the psalmists retold the stories, they were diligent to call for thanksgiving and praise in response.
That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. Psalm 26:7
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart…
He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and merciful. Psalm 111:14
Psalm 107 summarizes the Israel’s journey with this refrain,
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
This tradition carried on throughout Israel’s history. We find similar retellings in the Prophetic Books as well as the New Testament. It’s one of my favorite traditions of the Christian faith.
So today, in keeping with the ages of remembering the wondrous works of God, what words of thankfulness come to your mind and heart? What kind of praise rises when you think about how God created the universe, and you? What about how his faithfulness from the beginning? What words of gratitude fill your mouth when you think about Jesus becoming human and living among us, that he sympathizes with us? And what about how he gave himself as the perfect sacrifice, died, and rose again just so we could be with him forever. Wow! And, what about how he’s making all things new?
Those instances are common testimonies for all of us. What happens in our hearts when we think about the details of his wondrous works in our lives. How he’s paid our bills, healed our sickness, sent encouragement, gave us words of wisdom, softened hearts, heard every prayer, spoken promises, sent provision, and protected us.
Whoa! How can we shut up about his wondrous works? When we remember his wonderful acts, great and small, personal and corporate, thanksgiving is sure to follow.
Jesus, help me remember. I’m so thankful for you and that you are with me. I’m grateful that your wondrous works are still in motion, and that I get to witness them every day.
