No.16 Not the Source of Wonder

Take a deep breath. The pressure is off. We don’t have to create awe, work a miracle, or hokey-pokey up the wonder. The source of wonder is God, and he’s pretty great at it.

When we surrender ourselves to God, he has all the room he needs to pour into, to work, and to create in us and around us. Partnering with him looks very different from us taking matters into our own hands (totally guilty of that!) and trying to make something happen. It’s about us saying yes, and moving when he says, “Go,” and staying when he says, “Wait.”

The psalmist writes, “I have been as a wonder to many, but you (God) are my strong refuge. My mouth is filled with your praise and with your glory all the day.” (Psalm 71:7) He understood that the source of what astonished people, the oohs and ahhs, was God’s work in him.

Consider Mary again. All she had to do was say yes to the Lord. She didn’t have to perform the miracle. God took care of the wonder.

For that matter, consider

Moses didn’t make the sea split. He just followed and obeyed.

Daniel didn’t manhandle the lions. God shut their mouths.

The woman with a blood issue didn’t, couldn’t cure herself. Jesus released healing into her body.

The disciples in upper room didn’t have to put on a charismatic show. The Spirit showed up and danced on their heads and filled their mouths.

You didn’t have to ____________. God _____________. (Fill in the blanks)

Jesus is the wonder worker, way maker, healer, provider, protector. We join with him by following where he leads and doing what asks. That’s not a scary pursuit. He is life and good. So it’s an amazing, uncomfortable at times but totally worth it, dance with God.

Jesus, I take my hands off the miracle and lock arms with you. You are the wonder and the source of wonder in life. How can I yoke up with you today? Do you see my “yes,” Lord?
