No.17 Wonder Beyond Comprehension

Wonder has so much to do with looking and seeing. But in one context, it goes a step past awe, past marvel, past surprised.

The Hebrew word pala has a few uses. One of them means “beyond comprehension”, as in too wonderful.

Jeremiah uses pala in this way but flipped around. In short, the Lord gave Jeremiah a very specific, detailed word about buying a field. The word came to pass exactly as it was given. Jeremiah’s response was,

‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.” (Jeremiah 32:17)

God’s work is often beyond my comprehension, but nothing is beyond his capabilities.

Two New Testament verses have come to mind as I’ve been writing. Although they do not use a word for wonder specifically, the principle is clearly present.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, Ephesians 3:20

In [Jesus] was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness cannot has not understood it. John 1:4-5

Jesus! You are the light that darkness’ cannot comprehend. Your works are far beyond anything I can even imagine. Truly, nothing is too difficult for you. I’m throwing my cares on you today.
