No.19 Behold the Wonder

It comes as no surprise that the word behold is related to the word wonder. In fear of repeating myself, wonder has so much to do with looking and seeing. The word behold is used throughout the Bible as an indicator that something really important is being said or is about to happen. “Look! Pay attention!” it tells us.

Here is a small selection of times when behold was used in the New Testament. Make note of the important scenes.

Fear not, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy that will be for all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-11

… the next day [John the Baptist] saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him, and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:16-17

He who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new. He also said, “Write down these words for they are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5

There is always something to follow when a behold is used. I don’t think the Lord necessarily uses that exact word today to get our attention. But, without a doubt, I believe he does give us wake up calls and indicators. Sometimes they prepare our hearts for a wonder that’s coming. Sometimes it’s a timely word for a current season that proceeds the Pay Attention! Other times they are like red flags, warning of us sin, wrong attitudes, or dangerous situations.

When I read these in the Bible, and it’s full of them, it makes me want to be a better listener so that I can be a better seer. Man, I don’t want to miss one thing Jesus is doing. Amen!

Jesus, Thank you for the wake-up calls! I believe it’s your kindness! You don’t want us to miss a thing either!
