(Reminder — we are putting wonder into practice these last few days of Advent, and Jesus is our subject.)
Isaiah prophesied of the coming Messiah in Isaiah 9, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor… “
Okay, I know I’ve been really nerdy this series, but I have one more insight from the Hebrew language. The word counselor is used in two different ways, “to advise and to plan or purpose.” Our God, the one who has always existed, is a Wonderful (awe, beyond comprehension, surprising, dialoguing, seeing) Counselor (advisor and planner). He isn’t a distant God offering generic advice. He’s got his hands in the planning.
And, he isn’t just another good counselor. Wonderful Counselor is his name. Name above all names, counselor above all counsel.
David writes, [the LORD] will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; [the LORD] will counsel you with his eye upon you. Psalm 32:8
He sees us.
James writes to us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach and it will be given to him.” (1:5)
He hears us.
Need advisement, need a plan? Ask the all-seeing, hearing Wonderful Counselor who is holding everything together.
Jesus, we look to you again. Thank you for being a generous counselor. You always have the insight we need.
Amen. He is truly full of wonder.
