Another part of hope’s meaning is assurance. Hope is solid. One of the Hebrew words for hope figuratively means “expectation and trust,” but literally, it means “cord.” As in, something to grasp and hold. It’s the same word used in Joshua as we read about Rahab. She hung a scarlet cord (hope) from a window as a signal to save her household. It’s a beautiful picture of the salvation we have in Jesus. His blood is the substance of our eternal hope. We build our lives in Christ because he is the solid assurance of life now and forever.
Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall. Matthew 7:24-25
