Hoping in God’s word, his promises, commandments is a repeated thought throughout Psalm 119. The psalmist writes,
- You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word (vs.114).
- Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path (vs.105).
- I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you (vs.11).
- I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your word (vs.147).
Those are just a highlight of the psalm’s depth.
I can’t help but wonder if the psalmist had any idea that the word he wrote about so fervently was God? That he existed through this very Word? That the Word would become flesh–as a baby–and walk among us? That the Word would die for him and then rise again. That the Word wasn’t just a lamp, but he is the Light of the World?
As believers today, we see a fuller picture of the truth held in Psalm 119. But I often pray that I will regard God’s word with the same zeal as the psalmist here, especially knowing all that Jesus fulfilled and accomplished in his life, death, resurrection, and in his assured return. Come, Lord, quickly.
