The lighthouse is a longstanding symbol of hope. It stands between land and sea to signal a safe harbor. Lighthouses are/were also used to indicate rough seas, dangerous reefs for sailors traveling in the night.
There are a few scriptures about light and hope, mostly laments. But what has my attention today is the Light of the World. In Matthew, Jesus, the Light of the World, tells us that we are also the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others…and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
Friends, we are beacons of hope. Like lighthouses, we have the source of light and life inside of us. When we shine, when we testify, when praise, when we hold firm to the truth of the Gospel, we are shining the light of life for the people around us. We are signaling a safe landing in Christ. We are signaling for truth amid crookedness. We are signaling hope to a dying, weary world desperate for life.
So, shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life. Philippians 2:5
