During a time of worship last week I was reminded of Isaiah chapter 6. As I was singing, I saw the scene come to life. The Lord’s robe filled the temple, Isaiah on his knees, undone, the seraphim purifying his mouth. And, then, the part where Isaiah responds, “Here I am!”
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” Isaiah 6:1-8
During that moment in worship, it occurred to me how much hope was in that response.
Yes, the Gospel is clear. The “Here I am” response comes with the cost of taking up our cross. But following Jesus always leads to life. Hope. That’s why he came as a baby, why he lived among us, why he died for us, and rose again — the hope of life with us forever.
When we say, “Here I Am! Send me.” We are full of hope for something. When we say, “I’ll go where you lead, God!” We are full of hope that something is shifting. When we say, “Yes, Lord!” We are full of hope for something to increase, something to decrease, for breakthrough, for revival, for reconciliation… I mean, the hope list goes on and on with that kind of response.
How are you responding today to his presence? Can you feel the hope rising in you? Can you hear it on your lips?
