To the worship leader who feels like a jukebox, I’m sorry, friend. I know that feeling. It makes Sunday mornings seem like a playlist rather than a fresh encounter with God.
In regards to praise & worship, I once heard it said that songs are like keys that unlock and release streams from heaven. Sometimes those moments are initiated by popular songs—they exist for a reason! But most often, it is the new song that rises from your team and church family in times of praise. Why? Because in those moments, it’s more about the adoration in our hearts for the only worthy—Jesus—than it is about music.
Whether it’s a few seconds of spontaneous praise that is overflowing from a heart in awe of God or taking that awe and writing original songs, do it. Cultivate the new song in your secret place, then take it to your rehearsals. Then, ask the Holy Spirit how to incorporate it into your worship services—he’s so wise!
You’re doing a great job, by the way. Thank you for leading worship! Thank you for all the time and preparation it takes to lead a team and lead your church family into worship week after week.
