I was watching a TV program about a gardener. Something she said pierced my heart. “Seeds produce more seeds.” A prayer shot straight up through my being, making me sit up at attention, and then it flew out of my mouth. Sow your word into my heart until my garden is in full bloom producing more seeds. As I wrote it down on paper, I sensed the Lord respond, “Will you till the soil of your heart with me and prepare for the planting?”
Oh, man. I didn’t think about that part.
Tilling seasons are long, hard hours. I picture a scene from an old Western. The sun is high in the sky, breathing down a farmer’s neck; his calloused hands wrap around the handles; he pushes as his horse pulls the blade or wheel through the dirt; dust stirs, and he stops every other step to dig up rocks. Misery.
But, the thing is, I’m committed to a continual yes before the Lord–with joy. In this surrender, all I have to offer is the soil of my heart. Thankfully, it longs for the Word of God, for the Word of God to dwell in it. That hasn’t always been true. So, I would rather break new ground with Jesus, till through it exposing stubborn stones, pulling up foreign root systems than settle for anything less.
I want to expand his garden in me. I want to see what we can grow, just how far we can reach. Not for my sake–for his name’s sake. To spread his glory, life, his word for as long and as far as I can.
What about you? Is there vacant land in your heart that you would surrender to the Lord? Is the Lord asking you to dream with him, expand with him?
Sow Your Word
Sow your word into my heart, Lord,
let the evidence unfold in blooms that run with promise.
Seed produces seed stretching boundary lines over hills and into valleys.
My heart is yours, a garden that will not return void.
