In Luke 7, we read about the time Jesus was having dinner with a Pharisee named Simon, and a sinful woman came and interrupted their dinner. In the presence of her mocker, her harshest critic, she wept at Jesus’ feet. She dried his feet with her hair. She kissed his feet. She anointed his feet with her treasured oil. Jesus takes the opportunity to silence judgment and give us a picture of forgiveness.
Those forgiven much, love much. Those forgiven little, love little. The sinful woman’s audacity to push past social norms and etiquettes so she could honor Jesus was a sign of much love.
In response, Jesus defends and ministers to her. Your sins, though many, are forgiven… Your faith has saved you; go in peace. I can only imagine the freedom, the peace she must have experienced at that moment. The turmoil of sin, the conflict of judgment that had rested on her for so long, lifted in a moment.
Do you know that peace?
