I love Psalm 119. I haven’t always loved it. I used to think it was too long and repetitive and would find myself skipping parts or all of it. But as I grow as a disciple, this Psalm becomes more and more precious to me. Yes, it is a long chapter with lots of repetition, but so is my exercise routine, and it only makes me stronger.
Today we begin a series called Divorcing the World* in hopes of finding spiritual and practical principles for breaking fellowship with darkness and deepening fellowship with the kingdom of heaven. Psalm 119 will serve as a guide for us because these themes are found (repeated) throughout the chapter, and its centerpiece is the Word and precepts of God.
Exciting.
Before we dive in, let me clarify a couple of things. In using the term “world,” I am referencing the kingdom of darkness, ungodly counsel, and ideology without the light of Christ. For me, these words are interchangeable. I am NOT referring to people or groups of people. Our war is not with flesh and blood but with principalities and strongholds. We have one enemy. He is called Satan, and he is the father of lies.
*A few years ago, I heard Jesus Image lead people in this declaration, “We divorce the world and marry Jesus.” It pierced my heart. What an incredible declaration. It was sobering to hear the word divorce used in such a righteous way. Anyway, giving honor where it is due — I borrowed the idea from my brothers and sisters in Florida.
The point of this series is to be practical and to engage with the Word of God. It’s easy to say amen to the idea of divorcing the world without having a clue as to what it actually looks like in day-to-day life. So, let’s start by introducing four ways to break fellowship with the world and deepen fellowship with God. Then, in the next few posts, we will look at each one in conjunction with Psalm 119 and other passages.
Four Ways to Divorce the World
– Gaze on the Jesus — Daily
– Wash Yourself in the Word — Daily
– Disengage from Wickedness — Immediately
– Pick Your Treasures— Daily
These aren’t new ideas. And Lord knows I talk about gazing on Jesus all the time. But this series will hopefully continue to take us further into Kingdom life and give us fresh fire for our daily routines.
We will start with Gazing on Jesus in the next post. Meanwhile, will you take some time and read Psalm 119? Spread it out by sections, read it all at once, or whatever works for you. Highlight words and ideas that stick out. Turn some of the verses into prayers. Again, there’s a lot of treasure there–delight in it.
