My son, Winter, has a dog named Maggie. I’m not a breeder, but it looks like she has some Dalmatian and Pointer in her, maybe a little Greyhound. What I do know for sure is that all the energy in the world is trapped in her tail. Beware! I also know that when I’m holding a doggie treat, Maggie sits focused at my feet. Wherever my hand goes, her eyes follow. And, I know that she sits by the window when Winter is gone, waiting and watching. As soon as she can hear his car, Maggie’s head pops up, nose to the window, and her tail begins to wag with happy force. She loves her human.
The definitions for worship in Hebrew and Greek are pretty much the same from different experts. To bow, prostrate oneself in adoration, to kiss. But Strong’s Dictionary adds a unique simile. In short, he adds this because of etymology, and I would argue, to help readers understand.
Worship (proskyneo, Greek) —
To kiss (like a dog licking its master’s hand);
to prostrate oneself in homage/adoration.
It took me a minute to appreciate this picture. I almost dismissed it, wanting a different analogy. But then, I remembered Maggie and how she watches the things she loves. And then, it hit me.
In a less like a dog, more like a daughter kind of way, I hope my eyes are glued to God the same way Maggie watches for my son. In a less like an owner, more like a Father kind of way, I know God deeply cares for me.
I seek him like a treasure. I stay by his side because he is the treasure. I stay with him because his love for me is unmatched, and he faithfully provides for me–no begging or paw-shaking required. He watches over me just because I’m his child.
The eyes of all look to you, and you give them food in due season.
You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
Psalm 145:15-16
So, thank you, Dr. Strong. I get it! Thank you, Maggie, for being the goodest girl. And, Winter, for being my favorite son.
And thank you, God, for being the treasure! I worship you.
I Worship You
I seek the treasure of your face
I kiss your hand full of grace
I’ll stay by your side
Only you satisfy
No one loves me as you do
I worship you
