Day 14
Very Present Hosts, Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
Pause.
How present is very present? I don’t know about you, but I appreciate the extra oomph here from the writer.
Continue.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam…nations rage, kingdoms totters…The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. (vs.2-3, 4-7)
In Hebrew, the word hosts has military overtones, as in army, war, and warfare. So our present, very present help has an army with him under his command.
Can you picture that?
As you face whatever it is that has you bound in fear, can you see Almighty standing beside you, looking at it with you? Can you see the warfare he brought with him?
In verse 6, the psalmist writes, The earth melts as he speaks. Wow!
Can you see that? Your fear melting with no resistance — like ice cream on a summer day— as the Lord looks you in eye and speaks, “Don’t be afraid. I am with you,”
This is Emmanuel: Very present and he knows how to fight. He brings the V-I-C-T-O-R-Y
Take minute and meditate on Psalm 46. There’s more to see.
