Day 15: Kinsman Redeemer, Isaiah 43
There are many passages in Isaiah about the coming Messiah. I believe Isaiah 43 and 44 to be among them. Within them, we will find a retelling and reassuring of what God has done and is doing for Israel.
Here’s a simplified summary.
The Lord, your Redeemer, says, I’ve been with you all along. I made you. You are mine. I saved you. I love you. I am king. And I’m about to do it all over again in a new way. You are my people.
The word for Redeemer in these passages is Ga’al (or Goel), meaning “kinsman.” You may be familiar with that term from the book of Ruth—another insightful foretelling of Jesus. But this is the highlight for today: We are not redeemed by a stranger or a foreigner. We are saved by the very same hands that created us. Our king is also our maker, and our redeemer is our kinsman. Salvation comes to us in a very personal way.
These words that were spoken to a captured and exiled Israel are just as true for us today in our world, our times, and our lives.
Your Redeemer says, I formed you. I know your name. You are mine. I will be with you in the river. I will be with you in the fire. Fear not. I am with you.
