Day 18
Our Sympathetic Savior, Hebrews 4
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace. Hebrews 4:14-16
God incarnate. Flesh and bones, walking and talking in life just as we do. Fully human, tempted in every way just as we are. Yet, he was fully God and remained without sin. The sympathetic Savior.
He understands our cries and pain, range of emotions, and desires. But his life demonstrates victory over it all. He allows us to draw near, without wavering, to the throne of grace. What’s at the throne of grace? Everything we need.
That’s better than any god I can make up, build up, carve, or dig up. He isn’t dead, and he isn’t fake. The psalmist writes about the lifelessness of idols made by human hands (Psalm 115). But that’s not Jesus. Our Savior sympathizes with us in every aspect of life because he is with us. And that is our confidence to draw near the throne of grace.
This is Emmanuel: Our confident approach to the throne of grace.
