Day 19
Strength and Portion, Psalm 73
Psalm 73 begins with a list of intimidating qualities of an enemy and how pointless life and the future seems for the author’s children. But then there’s a turn.
When I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task.
Until I went into the sanctuary of God, then I discerned. (vs.16&17)
Did you see it? Until I went into the dwelling place of God, then I discerned.
Feeling overwhelmed? Confused? Nihilistic, even?
There is an understanding that comes from spending time with God. There is no other way to say it. Go into the secret place, close the door, and engage with God. Repeat. This is the invitation and access we have through Emmanuel. To commune with him–he is with us, and we are with him.
Listen to the resolve of the Psalmist as he concludes.
I am continually with you, [God]
You guide me with counsel
Whom have I in heaven but you?
There is nothing I desire besides you
My flesh and heart fail
But God is the strength and my portion forever
For me it is good to be near God;
I have made the LORD God my refuge…Psalm 73:23-28
This is Emmanuel: Dwell with him. He is our strength and portion forever
