Day 20
Filled With Him, John 14
One of the impressions I had for the year 2022 was to befriend the Holy Spirit like never before. (Click here to read 2022 impressions.) I’ve spent a good deal of time this year reading and studying scripture about the Spirit and, of course, just being with him.
There are many descriptions of the Spirit throughout the Bible: Hovers, poured out, rests on us, guides, empowers, gift giver, etc. They are all amazing! But, at least for this year, the description that is transforming me the most is the Holy Spirit is filling me.
Jesus promised his disciples,
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will send you a Helper, the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17
The Helper is dwelling in us! Not just a little bit in us— filled. Not just enough to get by—filled.
There are many verses that describe people as being filled with the Spirit. Like, …I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship (Exodus 31:3), …Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1), …the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit (Luke13:52).
It’s the best thing!
We need him, friends. He is our Helper, a gift from the Father and Jesus.
This is Emmanuel: The Spirit with us, in us, and filling us.
Amen!
