Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” Exodus 33:18
This request, this plea, follows some impressive encounters Moses had with God. He was saved from a genocide. There was the burning bush, the plagues, the splitting of the Red Sea, the Ten Commandments, cloud by day, and fire by night. And, yet, here was Moses meeting with God and asking to see his glory. What was Moses longing for?
I’m reminded of a quote from John Trapp, “The more a man knows of God, the more desirous he is to know him.”
But I also can’t help but wonder if he was crying out for Jesus. Moses had to have caught a glimpse of him while encountering God’s presence. Regardless, what followed was surely a shadow of Christ as God hid Moses in the cleft of a rock so his glory wouldn’t kill him (Exodus 33:22).
I don’t know about you, but Moses’ request and this encounter with God are stirring a hunger in me.
As we set our hearts on your coming and your coming again, we say, show us your glory, Jesus, again and again. We are desperate for you.
