Jesus said to Martha, Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God? John 12:40
Before getting to Lazarus’ tomb, Jesus reveals to Martha that he is the Resurrection and the Life. Like many of us, she took what he said and applied it to what she already knew. But Jesus was preparing her (and anyone listening) for something she had yet to see—something glorious. When they get to the tomb, Martha gets a little nervous because she doesn’t understand, and no one likes the smell of dead things. Jesus admonishes her, Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?
Jesus makes this connection between belief and glory. Although Jesus loved Martha and longed to reveal himself to her, as he does us, he quickly addressed her lack of faith, as he does us.
I don’t know about you, but I want to see his glory—any way that it comes. So, I find myself asking the Holy Spirit for help today. Search me!
- Am I listening to what God is saying? I want to hear it all!
- Are there any obstacles to faith in me? Help my unbelief!
I know it’s a merry season, and addressing faith can be challenging. But the Christmas holiday is as fleeting as the Christmas ham. The truth of the gospel and our lives in Christ are eternal. Why wait until tomorrow? There is something glorious to be seen today!
As we set our hearts on your coming, Jesus, and your coming again, expose our unbelief and give us ears to hear and eyes to see what you are revealing. We want to know your glory!
