I’m truly amazed at the people we read about in the Bible who have this resolve to cling to the Lord no matter what. Like Job, who asked a million questions during utter loss but could still say, I know my redeemer lives. And Jacob who didn’t let go of God until there was a blessing. And the remnant of people at the time of Jesus’ birth who, at the first stirring of God’s movement after hundreds of years, were ready to go all in with him.
I want to be like that.
Psalm 63 has always been a favorite of mine. But it has never felt more relatable to me than this year, 2024.
…in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
There have been times when my heart felt so parched. But the thing to remember about this line is its setting. It’s nestled in the psalmist’s resolve for the Lord. In the thirst and weariness, he looked to the dwelling place of God and beheld his glory.
Daily Reading: Psalm 63:1-4
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.
As I navigated through the year with Jesus, I took cues from Psalm 63.
When the times are dry and weary, I will still come and dine with the Lord. When the nights are long and days longer, I will still turn my eyes to his. When the waiting seems fruitless, I will keep tending my garden. At the faintest whisper of his voice, I will rejoice. For every piece of the puzzle, I will praise like the fullness of the promise is revealed.
Isn’t that what the advent season is about? At least in part.
Waiting and watching regardless of the conditions.
