Advent Day 18: Listening to Peace

Advent Day 18: Listening to Peace
A selection from 25 Days of Peace 2021, adapted 2024

I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his people. Psalm 85:8

What does it take for us to listen?

I tend to turn things up when I can’t hear — I can’t hear the radio over the road noise; turn it up.
I can’t hear you over the dishwasher; speak louder.

But those things are upside down from the kingdom of heaven. Listening to what the Lord is saying involves moving to a quiet place—physically, mentally, and spiritually.

It is in the still places where I can hear him, really listen.

And, as the psalmist writes, the benefit of listening to what the Lord says is the promise of peace.

Jesus, as we celebrate your birth and prepare for your return, we confess our need to hear you and for peace. Holy Spirit, lead us to the still places and teach us to listen.
