Leadership thought:
A position of leadership does not guarantee us a word of God, only a position of hearing can make that happen.
Consider the following passage. Take note of how many leaders are mentioned and the places they governed.
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Luke 3: 1-3, ESV
I don’t know if Luke intentionally began the chapter that way or if he was just being a good historian, but I coudln’t help but notice the contrast between those 7 big-time leaders and John the son of Zechariah today as I read. Out of all those leadership positions, the word of God came to John in the wilderness.
A position of leadership does not guarantee us a word of God, only a position of hearing can make that happen.
3 takeaways.
- What am I more interested in, God’s words or leadership positions / promotion? Or, What’s more important to me, position with God or position with man?
- No matter where the Lord places me, orders my steps, it can be a position of hearing. It’s my decision.
- Am I being faithful with the word(s) God is speaking to me? John proclaimed what he heard from God even though he was in no position to do so.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, I want eyes fixed on Jesus and ears that are leaned into his words. No matter where you lead me, wilderness or palace, I want to be positioned to hear you. Help me!
